Grazing behavior and winter phytoplankton accumulation

چکیده
Abstract. Recent observations have shown that phytoplankton biomass increases in the North Atlantic during winter, even when mixed layer is deepening and light limited. Current theories suggest this due to a release from grazing pressure. Here we demonstrate often-used models are linear at low concentration do not allow for wintertime increase biomass. However, mathematical formulations of as function quadratic concentrations (or more generally decrease faster than linearly decreases) can reproduce fall spring transition phytoplankton, including accumulation. We illustrate point with minimal model annual cycle designed simulate observed by BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats Atlantic. This analysis provides framework assessing hypotheses bloom formation.

Bivalve Grazing Can Shape Phytoplankton Communities
The ability of bivalve filter feeders to limit phytoplankton biomass in shallow waters is well-documented, but the role of bivalves in shaping phytoplankton communities is not. The coupled effect of bivalve grazing at the sediment-water interface and sinking of phytoplankton cells to that bottom filtration zone could influence the relative biomass of sinking (diatoms) and non-sinking phytoplank...
متن کاملPhytoplankton Growth and Microzooplankton Grazing in the Subtropical Northeast Atlantic
Dilution experiments were performed to estimate phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates during two Lagrangian surveys in inner and eastern locations of the Eastern North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre province (NAST-E). Our design included two phytoplankton size fractions (0.2-5 µm and >5 µm) and five depths, allowing us to characterize differences in growth and grazing rates between...

We investigated phytoplankton production rates and grazing fates in the Costa Rica Dome (CRD) during summer 2010 based on dilution depth profiles analyzed by flow cytometry and pigments and mesozooplankton grazing assessed by gut fluorescence. Three community production estimates, from 14C uptake (1025 ± 113 mg C m-2 day-1) and from dilution experiments analyzed for total Chla (990 ± 106 mg C m...
متن کاملPhytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the Homa Lagoon (İzmir Bay, Turkey)
Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated at one station in the Homa Lagoon from February to January in 2006-2007. Our results showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates and tintinnid ciliates and nauplii. Microzooplankton grazing increased with increasing of temperature. Grazing ra...
متن کاملPhytoplankton growth, microzooplankton grazing, and carbon cycling in marine systems
We present an analysis of the global impact of microplanktonic grazers on marine phytoplankton and its implications for remineralization processes in the microbial community. The data were obtained by an extensive literature search that yielded 788 paired rate estimates of autotrophic growth (m) and microzooplankton grazing (m) from dilution experiments. From studies in which phytoplankton stan...
